Dr Haertsch has over 30 years experience in gender reassignment surgery, gaining experience here and in the United States. This surgery is also known as sex affirmation surgery. He performs male to female reassignment. Dr Haertsch's work complies with the requirements of the World Professional Association for Transgender Health, the world authority on gender reassignment surgery.

Patients wishing to undergo surgery require two independent psychiatric evaluations indicating that the surgery is appropriate for them. They also require a letter from an endocrinologist outlining their hormone status.

All patients undergoing gender reassignment surgery consult at length with Dr Haertsch to decide the appropriate procedure for them. Male to female surgery is performed at Sydney Private Hospital in Ashfield, Sydney and involves 7 - 10 days as an in-patient. Female to male surgery involves a series of operations performed both in hospital and in the rooms at Epping over several months.

After surgery, patients will want to change their gender on their birth certificate. This can be done by filling in the appropriate form at the NSW Registry of Births Deaths & Marriages. There are two forms, one for births registered in NSW and one for births registered overseas.

Practice staff and the staff at the hospital have extensive experience in gender affirming surgery. Please contact us on (02) 4226 6111 to arrange an appointment or e-mail any enquiries to Dr Peter Haertsch.
